In Brewster I parked in Markel Memorial Park which is closer to the southern end than Southeast Town Park. It is a smooth, wide asphalt path that is used for many activities including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. You must do Walkway over The Hudson. Id definitely go back as this was my first time to try it out. Don't forget your camera for a selfie or groupie on the bridge overlooking the Hudson. My friend and I started at Hopewell Junction and glad we did. Not-so-Good: The portapotty at the Hopewell Junction depot was disgusting and clearly had not been serviced in a very long time. Or Whaley Lake? Enjoyable ride overall. If the state paves the disused Maybrook train line from Brewster to Hopewell Junction, thetwenty-two mile gap in the Empire State Trail can easily close. The only problem was that it incorrectly listed a particular parking lot and sent me on a wild goose chase for a non existent parking lot. I rode most of the Maybrook Trailway on a cold Easter Sunday in 2022. This section runs from Brewster to Hopewell Junction. Once you get east of the bridge, the trail is MUCH LESS crowded. No regrets fabulous paved trail. way too many people on rhe bridge but it is labor day weekend. This rail-trail has the distinction of having the longest rail-trail bridge in the world! Although Im guessing, I think that, where the bike path dies in Brewster, New York, a continuation of the paved bike path will spring up in the next three years because theres a way to do it, and the way looks clear. there there. The sound of birds above you as you take this hike its pretty impeccable. The best time to visit here is early morning in the fall. The route is very open since the trail parallels the old (still there) tracks, theres a feeling of openness bright sun the entire way. The trail climbs steeply to some old ruins of a casino. The perfect place to stroll and enjoy fall colors. It is nicely paved all the way to HJ with mileage markers with "HJ" indicating distance to Hopewell Junction. The adjacet sand/ soil path is level, clean and well maintained. Not too many people maybe because there was a warm summer rain that felt pretty nice. THE TRAIL WAS PAVED ALL THE WAY AND NICELY SHADED WITH RASPBERRIES GROWING ALONG THE SIDES, I RETURNED TO THE START OF THE WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON TRAIL WHICH WAS CROWDED BUT THAT WAS TO EXPECTED SEEING ITS POPULARITY AND GREAT VIEWS. The parking lot at Overocker road is small. It is excellent how the trail links up with the walkway-over-the Hudson (which was simply an abandoned hulk when I lived there!) Picking a favorite section is a really hard call, they both have their pluses. The pond is crystal clear and has a wonderful tree line right on the water. There is a section where you ride over a large pond on a bridge that is nice. Not ready for biking at this location YET, but it will be fun to watch things progress from here, and eventually connect up to the Putnam Trailway (http://www.traillink.com/trail/putnam-trailway.aspx). Other than that this was a really nice trail and I would bike it with caution, or a mountain bike. On the way back we took the River trail. It goes parallel to the river and it is very pretty. We started from the southern endpoint in Hopewell Junction and rode the trail to Poughkeepsie where we rode over the Walkway Over The Hudson on onto the Hudson Valley Rail Trail to New Paltz. There is only road side parking on a soft shoulder, both sides of the road. This ride takes us from the Brewster Trailhead passing Ice Pond, The Great Swamp, a rail trestle bridge, and the back side of Greenhaven Prison (!).. 12 memorial benches in less than 1.5 miles and business advertisements, complete with phone numbers have replaced the natural scenery in front of Lake Walton, what was once the most scenic section of the 15 mile stretch to the Walkway. The MTA has increased their warnings complete with fines for all to stay off the trail.
