More recently Susan Edwards Richmond, poet in residence at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, published in 2007 a chapbook of poetry titled "Purgatory Chasm" that explores the site's geologic and human history in sharp, precise images. The Chasm runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as 70 feet. These roots push through the rock and forces it apart. There are massive piles of rocks to climb over, as well as 80 foot tall cliffs on either side when you're down in its depths. _Boston Rocks_ lists climbs from 5.5 to 5.11 scattered along "a chasm [that] runs for a quarter of a mile with walls of Milford Gneiss that rise as tall as 50 ft", but don't expect a quarter-mile of clean faces. The entire gorge is around 300 yards long and 20 yards deep, and the pink rock walls have been smoothed by the centuries to form an incredible vista for visitors.
It is possible that the gneiss formed during the event when the Avalonian terrane was sutured to the coast of North America because the collision caused a large amount of heat to be generated. The schools are known to be good, with a strong commitment to developing the whole child.
Ice wedging is a very common form of weathering in areas where the temperature fluctuates between below and above freezing. When a rock is found in such an area and has small cracks in it, water can seep through and fill these cracks. Million Dollar Quartet.

146 in Sutton. In the photo above, the roots of this tree seem to have split the rock towards the bottom left and has created a long crack where the roots grew into. Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton, Mass., carries the moniker. "You really have to be pretty sure-footed," she said. Additionally, there is also an indoor restroom located inside the park office. Purgatory Chasm is located in Central Massachusetts and is made up of an unusual type of sandstone called Roxbury Puddingstone.
